Taking that first step toward therapy takes courage. Whether you've been struggling for years or something recent has finally brought you here, you don't need to have it all figured out before you reach out. At McMillan Behavioral Health and Addiction Services in Ferndale, Michigan, we start where you are — and we go from there together.

MBHS offers individual outpatient therapy for adults navigating a wide range of mental health concerns. Our approach is trauma-informed, culturally competent, and affirming of all identities — because the most effective therapy begins with feeling genuinely safe and understood.

What We Help With

Depression & Mood Disorders

Depression looks different for everyone. For some it's persistent sadness or hopelessness. For others it's numbness, exhaustion, or a growing disconnection from the things and people that used to matter. MBHS provides individual therapy for a range of mood disorders including:

  • Major Depressive Disorder
  • Persistent Depressive Disorder
  • Grief and loss
  • Life transitions including job loss, relationship changes, and identity shifts
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
  • Emotional dysregulation
  • Despair, isolation, and loneliness

If you've been struggling to find motivation, feel like yourself, or simply get through the day — therapy can help you build the skills to begin feeling more like yourself again.

Anxiety & Worry

Anxiety can show up as constant worry, physical tension, avoidance, or a persistent sense of dread that's hard to explain to the people around you. MBHS provides individual therapy for:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
  • Social anxiety
  • Panic and fear-based responses
  • Constant worry and intrusive thoughts

You don't have to keep managing it alone. Therapy can help you understand where your anxiety is coming from and develop real tools to interrupt it.

Trauma & Complex Trauma

The mental health field's understanding of trauma has grown enormously in recent years — and so has our ability to treat it. Trauma doesn't always come from a single dramatic event. Complex trauma, sometimes called C-PTSD, often develops from prolonged experiences like childhood neglect, sexual or physical abuse, growing up in an unsafe environment, or navigating years of discrimination as an LGBTQ+ person.

Unhealed trauma can shape the way you see yourself, your relationships, and the world around you — often in ways that are hard to connect back to the original experience. MBHS is trained and certified in Trauma-Informed Care, an approach that prioritizes safety first, helps you regain control of your own narrative, and moves at a pace that works for you.

LGBTQ+ Mental Health

Living as an LGBTQ+ person in today's world carries a unique set of pressures — from daily discrimination and microaggressions to the longer-term effects of internalized shame, family rejection, and navigating systems that weren't built with you in mind. These experiences are real, and they have real mental health consequences.

At MBHS, we are not simply LGBTQ+-friendly. We are informed, affirming, and experienced in working with LGBTQ+ individuals across a full range of concerns — including identity exploration, coming out at any stage of life, the mental health impact of homophobia and transphobia, and the intersection of LGBTQ+ identity with addiction, trauma, and relationship challenges.

We honor your privacy, your pace, and your own individual journey — whatever that looks like for you.

Please note: MBHS is not currently able to provide treatment for gender dysphoria or hormone therapy. We are happy to discuss referrals to specialists in the Metro Detroit area for those specific needs.

Suicidal Ideation & Crisis Support

If you are experiencing thoughts of not wanting to be here — including passive thoughts of sleep and not waking up, or feelings that the world would be better without you — please know that these thoughts are something therapy can help with, and that reaching out is the right move. MBHS provides a safe, non-judgmental space to talk through what you're experiencing and begin to build a path forward.

If you are in immediate crisis, please call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or go to your nearest emergency room.

Other Individual Therapy Needs

Don't see what you're dealing with listed here? Reach out anyway. Mark McMillan is happy to speak with you directly about what you're navigating and whether MBHS is the right fit — or to point you toward someone who is. You don't have to figure that out on your own either.

Our Approach

Every client at MBHS receives individualized care — there is no one-size-fits-all treatment plan here. We take time to understand your full history, your identity, your goals, and what hasn't worked before, so we can build something that actually fits your life.

MBHS offers telehealth therapy for Michigan residents who prefer to meet remotely, through a secure, easy-to-use platform. Whether you come in to our Ferndale office or connect from home, the care is the same.

We serve clients in Ferndale, Royal Oak, Hazel Park, and across Metro Detroit and Oakland County.
