Our mission

Compassionate, trauma-informed therapy for adults navigating depression, anxiety, trauma, and the challenges of everyday life — in a space that honors who you are.

When I entered therapy for the first time in my early 30s, I remember the shame and anger I felt filling out the intake paperwork. I even lied about my alcohol intake. Years later, sitting across from a compassionate, knowledgeable addiction therapist, I remember the fear of finally admitting I had a problem with alcohol — and at the same time, the feeling that I was safe. That I could trust this person to help me.

That moment changed everything.

When I decided to pursue becoming a clinical social worker, I knew I wanted to become a certified addiction therapist and do what people in recovery call "offering what was freely given to me." My mission from the beginning was to recreate that moment for every person who walks through the door at MBHS — a moment of safety, trust, and genuine human connection.

When I opened McMillan Behavioral Health and Addiction Services in October 2020, that was the goal: to create a place where anyone could feel seen, heard, and not judged. Whatever brought them there.

That hasn't changed.

What We Stand For

At MBHS, culturally competent, trauma-informed care isn't a marketing phrase — it's the standard we hold ourselves to in every client interaction. We understand how difficult it can be to trust again after past experiences of betrayal, rejection, or shame. We don't take that trust lightly.

Our team is trained and vetted to use inclusive language, to respect each client as an individual, and to create space for healing from past trauma and pain — at a pace that works for you. We use the SAMHSA Trauma-Informed Care Approach to Behavioral Health Services, a proven framework for addressing the effects of complex trauma in adults.

MBHS serves individuals, couples, and groups in Ferndale, Michigan and across Metro Detroit — including LGBTQ+ communities, people in recovery, survivors of childhood trauma, and anyone who has felt that the mental health system wasn't built for them. We're here to be different.

This too shall pass. Stay in the moment, and live life one day at a time.

Always remember, this too shall pass, so stay in the moment, and live life one day at a time.
