LGBTQ+ Issues

Today’s divisive climate and social change occurring right before our eyes can be an often scary and frightening process, which can feel threatening and uncertain. The discrimination and continued marginalizing that LBGTQ+ individuals face on a daily basis can be a significant source of stress which in turns leads to other medical health issues, and a barrier to one’s overall happiness and well-being.

Here at MBHAS, we are trained in offering culturally competent care, meaning we are not just “friendly” to our LGBTQIA+ clients. We are informed, inclusive and compassionate in how we deliver our treatment and services. We offer a variety of proven affirmative therapy interventions that can assist with healing the effects from years of enduring homophobic, transphobic, and heterosexist influences in your life.

We strive to honor your discretion, your privacy and your own individual journey, to accepting who you are authentically and genuinely no matter what that journey may entail. Let us help create a plan that best fits your needs. You no longer need to face these challenges alone.

[Please note unfortunately at this time, MBHS is currently unable to offer treatment for gender dysphoria, or any type of hormone therapy. We are happy to discuss referrals in the area for your specific needs for treatment. Pease do not hesitate to reach out to us with questions or concerns.]

Trauma & Complex Trauma (C-Trauma)

With today’s newer medical technology, the medical and mental health field has grown tremendously in our understanding of Trauma, the long-terms effects of trauma and the treatment of trauma, especially from an holistic approach of mind, body and spirit.

Here at MBHAS, we are trained and certified in Trauma Informed Care, the latest intervention technique used in treating many forms of trauma, like trauma from an event, including violence or surviving a life-threatening event. Also, Trauma Informed Care can be used in treating what is now known as Complex Trauma (C-Trauma), including complex trauma from our childhood experiences, including childhood neglect or sexual or physical abuse, or growing up LGTQ+. Unhealed trauma can manifest in many different ways, and have a variety of symptoms on the adult as they navigate life after the event. The Trauma Informed Care intervention has as it’s first priority creating a safe space for you; developing the necessary skills in order for you to begin to feel safe and gain back control of you narrative and your life.

We can help with creating skills and strategies that will better assist you in understanding, coping with, processing the emotions and memories tied to traumatic experiences, with the end goal of enabling you to create a healthier and more adaptive meaning of the experience that took place in your life.

Couples Counseling

Couples Counseling & Pre-Marriage Counseling

Here at McMillan Behavioral Health and Addiction Services (MBHS), we believe everyone deserves to be in a happy, healthy, and safe relationship. We also honor the many paths there are to be in a relationship, including a monogamous two-person relationship, a non-monogamous relationship, a polygamous relationship, or however you and your partner(s) may define being in a relationship.

To say that relationships are not always easy can be an understatement! Especially during a global pandemic, like the current COVID-19 pandemic. Being in a relationship takes a lot of work; especially with healthy communication, arguments, infidelity, or trust.

Couples counseling can help you learn how to connect in a more positive and healthy way. Many of us often find it difficult to honestly express our wants & needs in a relationship. Then, when we don’t get what we feel we deserve, it can lead to deep resentments and anger. MBHS can teach you the tools you need to improve communication, navigate arguments better, heal betrayal from infidelity and mistrust; and learn how to trust your partner(s) again.

MBHS also recognizes that finding the help you deserve can be a scary and difficult path as well. Let us assist you while on your path to discover what services are available that best fits you and your partner(s) needs. Here at MBHS, we offer counseling for many common situations and/or issues in a romantic relationship or marriage. These include: learning new communication skills, learning new skills to heal resentment and anger, and learning to heal from past or current betrayal. MBHS can also help with non-traditional issues as well, including porn addiction in a relationship, recognizing one’s sexual orientation later in life, technology addition, or other issues as well.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns about your current situation or relationship issues. Let’s make today the day you begin your journey to a healthy, more trusting relationship.

Pre-Marriage Counseling

Mens Group Counseling

Men’s Group (a place for individuals who identify as male to heal from past childhood sexual abuse)

It is estimated that 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused before age 18. Typically, this occurs within a long-term, on-going relationship, that escalates over time, usually lasting about 4 years. As adults, these men may experience severe depression and other symptoms associated with post-traumatic stress (PTSD), and have self-destructive behaviors, including out-of-control behaviors with sex or alcohol or other drug use. Often, these men choose not to seek help.

The Men’s Group was started in 2019 from a need for individuals who identify as male to heal from past childhood, adolescent, pre-teen, or teen sexual trauma. This group meets once a month, usually in the evening on the third Thursday of the month. This group is ongoing, individuals are welcome to join anytime.

As part of the on-going treatment, the group will address but is not limited to:

      • Impact of sexual trauma
      • Healing symptoms of Complex PTSD
      • Individualized treatment goals
      • Therapy completion plan
      • Healing shame-identity
      • Gaining back control of the narrative about the past

Addiction Counseling

Addiction, Out-of-Control Behavior, Substance Abuse Issues

Addiction is often defined today as more than just an “abusive” use of drugs, as it is beginning to include a behavior component as well. Besides the more common symptoms of cravings, urges, compulsivity and the inability to stop use; we can now begin to name other out-of-control behavior symptoms, that usually disregard consequences to self or others. These out-of-control behaviors often include putting one’s self or others’ safety at risk, continuing the behavior in spite of negative consequences, and a feeling of “loss of control” associated with the behavior involved in the addiction.

In recovery language, “admitting we have a problem is the first step.” The first step toward gaining the life you have always wanted is acknowledging that you are struggling with substance use issues. Maybe you are struggling to admit to a more intangible “addiction” like sex, pornography or “addicted to a person”? This would be an out-of-control behavior issues that feels much like a chemical dependency addiction.

Here at MBHAS, we understand the stigma and shame attached to admitting to any sort of issues associated with behaviors that often lead to unwanted life consequences. That’s why you’ll find the word “addiction” in our name – we are the leading experts in the Metro Detroit area for treating chemical and behavior-based addiction in an on-going, outpatient treatment setting. We tailor each treatment plan to each individual client, we don’t believe in a “cookie-cutter” approach to treatment of addiction and out-of-control behavior issues. Starting your journey to recovery with us will ensure you have all the tools you need to become, as the recovery saying says, “happy, joyous and free.” We can help with these issues and more:

Alcohol misuse, including binge drinking and other issues associated with alcohol intake.
Chemical (drug) misuse, including Chemsex, PnP, and other out-of-control behavior issues.
Technology misuse/dependence, including dating apps, pornography watching and sex sites, social media abuse, and gaming addiction
Non-traditional recovery-based treatment plans, including Dharma Recovery, SMART recovery, or working together to develop a program that best fits your personal needs.

MBHS also recognizes that we have limitations and restrictions for substance abuse disorder (SUD) treatment at our office. We will work with you to determine if or when to refer to a higher level of care, such as Intensive Outpatient Treatment (IOP).

Mark McMillan, owner and Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) and Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC) from the State of Michigan, specializes in behavior-based addictions, including sex, pornography watching, masturbation, and technology. Mark also specializes in treating alcohol misuse, court order alcohol use disorders (AUD), and other issues related to alcohol use. Mark also specializes in other substance use disorders, including cocaine, marijuana, and other opioids. Our office works closely with other higher-level treatment centers to coordinate the based possible care for most chemical based addictions.

If you or a loved one is struggling with any kind of addiction, if you have any questions, please reach out to Mark directly. He will be happy to answer any questions and clarify any concerns you may have about how start your journey to getting back control of your life.

We understand how difficult and sometimes scary it can be to take that first step toward contacting us, whether about a mental health or an addiction issue, so we want you to know that we are here for you, to support you; and we are ready to help, when you are ready. Just let us know how we can start our journey, together.
